The exhaust system starts at your cylinder head, from there a pipe directs it to the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter chemically changes harmful exhaust gasses to cleaner ones. There are sensors on both sides of the converter to make sure the catalyst is operating properly and you are burning the correct amount of fuel. Then the gasses travel down another pipe to the muffler. The muffler quiets the exhaust noise made by the engine.
